… I should start off by saying that when Husband and I decided to tackle a fixer-upper, we weren’t prepared for a total gut renovation (TGR, if you’re fancy). In my mind, a fixer-upper meant just that: fixing up. In Husband’s mind, it meant the opposite: tearing down.
Not that I blame him, of course. The auction home we had purchased would be the perfect place for us and boasted a tiny little neighborhood school, walking paths and a massive backyard for our dogs to caper in. Yet what we thought would be a three-month project consisting of wallpaper removal, mold remediation and a finished basement quickly grew into an eight-month (or more!) complete overhaul.
Such is often the case with renovations. After all, while you’re removing wallpaper, why not get in and replace drywall or tear out walls? And when tearing out walls, why not make that tiny master bath into a suite? Or turn the dark den into a sunroom? And turn the living room into an office?
The list goes on, and now — three months after we’ve purchased our “fixer-upper”, we’re staring into the face of a dreaded TGR. We’ve given ourselves five months to move in. Think we can do it?
You’ll see. ;)
totally! i looove fixer-uppers — my sister-in-law just transformed an old eichler into a complete mid-century modern beauty! so excited to see the before&after pics!
only the contractor knows if you’ll be able to do it!
You’ll do it and it will be gorgeous!
I can’t say I blame him…sounds like fun! Good luck!
No doubt…I’ve every faith.
