It’s Friday, which means time for another Reader Profile! Today’s lovely reader holds a special place in my heart as one of the most supportive individuals I’ve come across. Jude is looking for words of wisdom from all walks of life— think we can provide a bit of that? ;)
Check out what makes Jude tick below… [click to enlarge and read!]
If you’d like to be featured on Design for Mankind, email me right here and tell me what’s keeping you up at night.
Erin, I really love this feature! It’s exactly what makes your blog so amazing :)
Jude, you’re hot!!
My bro-in-law is a welder, come to the Lou, he’ll teach you because women with power tools are oh-so-awesome.
I’m kind of a neat freak so a clean house makes me a happy person. I think Martha Stewart once said if your house is ever past the “can’t clean in 20 minutes for the in-laws that decide to pop over” mark- it’s too dirty. I always try to keep it at that 20 minute mark. That hasn’t really helped me get to where I am today though. I’m not really sure where I am professionally :)
hi jude!
i love the idea of welding – wouldn’t mind learning how to do that myself ;).
as far as feedback, i’m not sure i’ve arrived anywhere, yet, but i was a corporate paralegal for many years, and now work in marketing and have explored more creative pursuits in recent years.
i’ve been lucky to have mentors who were more likely to respond to my questions with “what do you think?” rather than give me the answers. i didn’t appreciate it at the time, but it does help you learn to problem solve, which is what most thing come down to at the end of the day. so, constant curiosity and an eagerness to learn have been key to me. my mom was like that, too.
also, i’ve read two things recently that have really stuck with me:
1. assume people are coming from a place of positivity – indra nooyi, ceo of pepsi and a women, and
2. be nice to the people who are nice to you – forgot where i read this, but it couldn’t be more obvious, but not done enough.
hope that’s useful. i enjoyed reading your profile.
Just thought I’d add that my desktop is an image by Keri Smith that says ‘you can do whatever you want.’
I don’t think I’ll ever change it.
I like that quote Erin!
oh, i need that image erin! i forget it’s true when the “what if” thinking pipes up, which is often. my mom was like that, too!
Here’s a link to the image, ladies:

It’s a goodie. :)
I love a powertool!
Best pieces of advice – oldies but goodies:
Go hard or go home.
& Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
& I like Erin’s too.
I like to rely on the phrase “everything happens for a reason”
Gets me through even the bad times.
Diana — that’s EXACTLY the way I think. I just try to do the best I can and hopefully things will fall into place.
I love this feature, Erin, and I adore Jude too. I enjoy reading her blog each day because she is just so sincere.
Have a great weekend!
this is THE BEST!!! I totally want to be featured. I’m emailing you right now. Love to you!!
I don’t have it on my desktop, but I’ve had that Keri Smith image for a while and love it.
Thanks to everyone for their words of wisdom. We’re all in such good company here in the DFM community and the virtual support beams you provide are greatly appreciated!
Hello wonderful Jude! I loved reading your profile! I don’t know if I’m qualified to give any words of wisdom at the tender age of 24, so all I can offer is instinct, instinct, instinct. It’s usually right and will knock you over the head if you choose to ignore it :)
this is AWESOME.
and
JUDE ROCKS!
i’m emailing you, sister.
xoxo
I really like this feature!
And for you, Jude, the best advice I’ve been given is to say “thank you” every night before you go to bed. If you stop to think of what you have to be thankful for, it puts everything in perspective and makes you appreciate your life and those in it.
GREAT advice, you guys.
hi jude. love your profile.
as for advice – i was lucky to grow up with my parents constantly telling me that i can do anything i set my mind to. we’ve all heard it – but trying anything & everything is priceless.
my parents also offered this – keep an open mind, community is important & be kind to everyone.
have a great one!
Yes, all the advice here has been really wonderful. You all are great!!!
Dear Jude-
Annie Dillard wrote in one of her books, “We live our lives as we live our days.” I say that sentance to myself just about every day as a way to help me gauge how well I’m living my life. If my day was filled with mundane tasks that I simply can’t escape, I ask myself, “How could I engage in these tasks and STILL be the loving, open and inspired person I aspire to be? How can i live my days as I wish to live my life?” And the answers that come range from “Quit your job, girl!” to “Take a walk! Make a nutritiously scrumptious meal! Have lunch with an old friend! Give someone a gift! Forgive yourself! Go sit outside and watch the chard in the garden grow!”
Here in CA where I live I know that our local Junior college offers CHEAP art classes (like, $12/unit), including welding! I wonder if your local community college might offer the same?
Once again, Erin, I love this reader profile you are doing! It’s the bomb!
i’m glad jude’s featured erin. she’s a sweetheart :)
as for advice, i’ve been told ever since i was a child, to treat everything as a learning experience. i’ve always treated each job i’ve had as if i were going to school, and learning something new, or having gone through an obstacle that i’ve never encountered before, and knowing that i’ve become wiser after having gone through it.
i’ve also learned the value of giving. it’s a very rewarding feeling knowing that you’ve given a bit of yourself.
also, being laid back and just riding the waves, instead of fighting makes life easier. absorb as miuch as you can in the process, and let go.
Shauna and Yas – thanks so much for your good thoughts!
