Photographer Alma Haser was asked to submit a self portrait for a project, but was hesitant to reveal her identity so she disguised herself with a wig and borrowed clothing. The result? She felt confident and began to feel like others might be empowered to “play dress up” as well. She writes:
“I started to understand that as individuals we use our hair through its colour, cut and style, to define ourselves. By eliminating the visual cue of hair, the portraits become less human and the individual becomes sublimated. I realized that I could continue my unrevealing self-portraiture by placing myself in a clone like crowd of women.”
Such an interesting study in confidence, disguise and empowerment. It reminds me of Jenny’s ‘Traveling Red Dress’ movement. Tell me, do you guys wear wigs and play dress up? I’ll admit, I don’t think I’ve ever worn a wig! Must rectify.
