need a job?

I know that most of you visit this blog to get away from politics, economical talk and job distress, but our nation’s situation has hit home in more ways than one and I think it’s my responsibility to address a few things.

Rarely do I get personal on the blog, and I like to keep it that way, mostly b/c I lead quite the boring life of take out and TV. BUT… if you want to get personal, you can email me anytime. I’m an open book, just not “online.”

BUT today, I’m disheartened that a few close friends of mine have lost, or are losing their jobs. Few are the sole breadwinners of their family and will risk losing their homes, cars and/or possessions. I think it’s important for us all to support each other in this community, so I’m taking a break from posting to seek help for the aforementioned few. I’d like to list their cities and/or job positions and descriptions and would love if any of you can help with some networking and/or creative job ideas for the below individuals. I will vouch for each of these people and would hire them myself if I could!

So, if you or anyone you know has any contacts in the below fields and/or cities, I’d love to hear from you. I can set you up with the job seekers [who you may already know] and you can go from there.

Thank you a billion for reading this far and for your kind nature. I’m so blessed to have a readership of brilliant and ENCOURAGING people. You are all so, so inspiring for me! In return, if any of you are also struggling with your current jobs, I’d love to help in any way. Email me and I can add you to the ‘job-seekers’ list, which unfortunately, may need to become a weekly installment in this time of turmoil.

  • Sadly, I have no information about available positions, but I did want to a kind word to these folks. I can’t imagine (nor do I want to be able to) the feeling of uncertainty or devastation that an unexpected break in money flow most definitely does cause. In many cases, though, these things can turn out to be a blessing…if one can ride it out long enough. Good luck and best wishes!

  • I would suggest those in finance open their minds to the possibility of working and living in Delaware. We have a large number of financial industries and our local economy has yet to be hit hard. In fact, I still see companies like ING posting for jobs nearly every day!

  • Unfortunately you can add my name to the list of job-seekers…I just sent you an email with my info.

And to Will Bryant…nowadays a hug is always greatly appreciated! In this case, I guess a virtual hug will do! :)

  • I hate hearing this… I wish I could offer help, but I cannot. I love that you are such a caring person Erin!!

  • i’m sorry to say that i have no job opportunities for these lovely folks, but can relate as i’ve had the rug pulled out from beneath my feet before. it’s not easy, but keep moving forward and let your old companies each your dust. the best way to say ‘thanks for the memories’ is to be wildly successful in the next phase of your life. and, you will.

  • Hi Erin, this is a very hard situation, but I want to say good luck to these guys! I´m in south america but If I know about something I will tell you

  • I wish I could help from my corner of the world, but instead I’ll just have to hope really hard that all your friends are back on their feet in no time.

  • ah, YOU are inspiring, and clearly a good friend. as a recently unemployed gal i feel your friends’ pain, but having support makes it easier on everyone. plus there is sort of a renewed drive or creative spurt that can come from feeling defeated (“i’ll show you!”). maybe that’s a silver lining? to be better and happier… hopefully.

i live in Austin, so i unfortunately can’t help with your particular quest, but i do wish you all the best of luck!

  • ah, so sad! My boyfriend lost his job a month ago and it’s been rough. He is a freelance master though and manages to slide by at the last moment when bills are due like a champ. So far..
Such a scary time, especially when all I can wonder is if people are just cutting back and laying off out of fear.

  • oh no, i wish i could help! i unfortunately have no relevant contacts in those cities…i wish your friends the very best. it is such a scary time. i do hope they find good jobs soon and look back at this as being a necessary change to bring them to their life’s purpose. good luck friends!

  • I´m sorry to hear about this and so happy to see that they can count on your support (in writing about it on design for mankind). I´ve been freelancing since I got laid off (six or seven years ago) and although it is scary, it´s also a great opportunity to learn new things, new people and be challenged in so many ways.

Slightly off topic, but not totally: the last few weeks I´ve received several news of friends with cancer. I mean, this crisis sucks, but I guess that in the end hearing bad news concerning health helps me put things in perspective. As we say in portuguese, let the rings go (and keep the fingers, because that´s what we really need).

I wish you guys the best of luck. May this be nothing but a turning point to a better stage of your professional (and personal) lives.

  • Crap! It’s getting scary out there :-(
I have no leads, personally, but I have found things here in the past:
    http://www.mediabistro.com
And believe it or not, on the arts/media/blah blah board on craigslist.
    Good Luck, people!

  • Thank you everyone— your kind words are SO appreciated! Keep your eyes and ears open and I’ll do the same! :)

    We’ll get through this…

  • This is so sad to read. I have been keeping up to date with the economic situation in America on the news, but this is actual reality. Good luck to your friends and I hope they find employment soon. I wish I had some leads…

  • I wish all your friends the best of luck and truly hope not to see anybody else y that hard position. :)

  • Sadly, we are in the same boat. My husband got laid off from his job of 5 years and we might have to sell our home and move elsewhere and we LOVE our home and where we live! A lot of people are out of work right now. Its a big reality but one that we can’t let define us. Stay strong everyone!
